Thank you for preventing the appointment of Erroll Southers to head of TSA, leaving the security of our nation’s airways leaderless during this critical time. One can only imagine how the security of our nation’s airports would be in the hands of unionized “lifer” professionals, with full benefits and a high incentive for a high performance. Instead, I feel much more comfortable knowing that the security of our nation’s airports lie in the hands of under-paid, no-benefits transitional workers who seek little incentive except finding a better job that could provide for their families. So, kudos Senator! Its quite clear that you hold the safety of airlines in high importance- or you would if you actually flew them opposed to lobbyist-provided corporate jets.
And a thank you also needs to go out to the 108 House Republicans who voted against the $4 billion of “wasteful government spending” in the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill that would have gone towards updating and improving, including $1.1 billion for explosives detection systems. Thank you for being so concerned about the safety of our money as opposed to, you know, our actual physical safety.

Peter Connelly has an interesting post up on the HuffPo about the effect of ideologues on the 2009 election year. Of course, its hard to accept his conclusion- that 2010 will be an “ideologically driven” election year- without countering that ideologues have basically dictated elections since 2000, and arguably since Reagan’s elections or the 1976 President elections, which was the first Presidential election in which the result was determined by evangelical “born again” Christian voters.
Still, Connelly makes some interesting points: that the pundits on either side were going to interpret the election results into their pre-determined narratives. The Democrats lost Virginia and New Jersey, according to Markos and FireDogLake’s Jane Hamsher, because they were not “liberal enough.” Yet according to FreedomWorks’ Dick Armey, the Republicans blamed the loss of New York’s upstate 23rd Congressional district on the faults of Constitution Party candidate Doug Hoffman who received support from the right-wing teabagger faction. This, despite the fact that the heavy influence provided by Armey and other outside interests effectively drove the Republican candidate out of the contest.

So, let me get this straight. As we close in on the first twelve months of the Obama administration, I’ll point out that fewer Americans have died in terrorist attacks on American opposed to the 3000+ Americans who died under the “steady leadership” of George W. Bush during his first twelve months. Yet, despite this far superior record by the Obama administration regarding terrorist issues, Congressman Pete Hoekstra (R-MI)- in an attempt to assert his douchiness to win the tea-bagger votes as he runs for Governor of Michigan- goes on Fox News less than 48 hours after the terrorist attempt by a Nigerian man aboard a Detroit-bound plane was foiled to blame the Obama administration.
Yes, that’s correct. The Republicans are attempting blame an unsuccessful terrorist attack on President Obama. (Remember when criticizing the President gave comfort to our nation’s enemies? I guess it’s okay when our President’s skin tone is darker.) Besides the fact that Rep. Hoekstra proves himself an uber-mensch, he also has a really pathetic record when it comes to national security matters.
Oh, and the US visa given to the would-be Nigerian terrorist? Given to him by the George W. Bush administration who- somehow- avoided any criticism from Rep. Hoekstra. Yeah, I know, I’m thinking the same thing: What an incredibly pathetic display made by Rep. Hoekstra on Fox. Yet utterly expected as well.

Rep. Parker Griffith announced today that he was switching parties, defecting to the GOP. This will result in the solidly Democratic district, which includes Huntsville, being represented by a Republican for the first time since 1869. Despite receiving $1 million from the DCCC, and funds from both Pelosi and Hoyer PACs, Rep. Griffith voted agaisnt the cap-and-trade and the health care bills in the House. Rep. Griffith also called the leadership of Speaker Pelosi as “too divisive” and said he probably would not support her re-election for Speaker. Rep. Griffith used his professional experience as a radiation oncologist to justify voting against health care reform, though I’m a little skeptical of a cancer-treating specialist who would vote agaisnt expanding access to care, thus insuring that poor people suffering from cancer would be doomed to die.
RNC Chairman Michael Steele should be celebrating this defection, but then Taegan Goddard over at CQ’s Political Wire revealed that Mr. Steele has been receiving speaking fees of upwards to $20,000 for various speaking gigs. This is a practice that no other party Chairman has ever participated in the past. Said former RNC Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf: “The job of a national chairman is to give speeches. That’s what the national party pays him for.”

McCain/Palin visor at the beach My god, this lady is so dumb. Is there a bigger idiot than Sarah Palin? While in Hawaii with her family she decided to go “incognito” by putting on a “visor”, that way nobody would recognize her with a flap over her forehead and a band around her head, much in the same way that when Superman puts on a pair of glasses he is mysteriously no longer Superman but now Clark Kent instead, or when Zoro dawns an eye mask he’s instantly unrecognizable. However, since the RNC hasn’t been buying Palin any new clothes in over a year, all she had were these old “McCain/Palin” visors left over from the campaign. Except wearing a visor that said “McCain/Palin” would obviously ruin the whole being “incognito” for those who already recognize her, because wearing a visor in the first place is such a dumb disguise. Solution? Palin decided, in her infinite wisdom that’s being reserved for when she presides over the most powerful nation in the world, and with the fact that nobody in Hawaii sells any other kind of hat, the best option would be to take a sharpie and black out the words “McCain/Palin” on the visor. Now nobody will know it’s her! Well, except TMZ who took pictures of her in her silly blotted out campaign visor.

What’s funny is that conservative critics actually claim that the Obama administration is “incompetent.”
With Department of Justice officials busting over 30 people in three states charging the federal government over $60 million in fraudulent Medicare costs, the Obama administration is certainly taking an efficient and competent stand against Medicare abuse.
These efforts by the Justice Department indicate how abuse of the Medicare system is rampant, as it is targeted by unscrupulous individuals looking at this federal government-run program as a cash cow. When Republican Senators rail against the planned decreases in Medicare spending as proposed by the current health care reforms, it needs to be asked: Are they arguing in favor of the fraudulent practices performed by those busted by the DOJ, which causes overspending by Medicare and puts it on insolvent ground?
Oh, that’s right, Republicans have always been against Medicare for ideological purposes. Why would they support efforts to ensure the programs solvency? Little wonder they oppose the efforts taken by an obviously competent Obama administration. Can’t have a solvent Medicare program now, can we?
