CPAC: Complete lack of conservative common sense

Once a year at CPAC, a bunch of angry white people get together to yell and complain about things they know nothing about. Granted, I’m not on the ground so I can’t provide first-person eyewitness, but according to Thom Hartmann, who worked radio row at the conference, he spent his time “looking at a sea of white people.”

CPAC has been described by the Washington Post as the “preeminent gathering of conservative activists,” and so I was eager to hear some of this mythical “conservative common sense” I keep hearing so much about, but yet see succeed in any manner. Unfortunately, with the conference now wrapped up, it appears that the amount of substance contributed at this conference could fit into a 140-character post on Twitter.

Nah, scratch that. Probably more like half a Tweet, 70 characters followed by a string of hashtags, such as: #obamasucks #nobama #wheresthebirthcertificate, etc. etc. You know, the extent of wit as provided by conservatives…

Ben Bernanke, TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2009

Regardless of how you personally feel about Ben Bernanke, the Chairman of the Fed who is being targeted by vocal activists both from the left and the right. In its article explaining why it chose Mr. Bernanke as Person of the Year, TIME magazine succinctly sums up how the economy has been saved by the efforts of the Obama administration:

“[Bernanke's] creative leadership helped ensure that 2009 was a period of weak recovery rather than catastrophic depression…”

Its such s shame that the average layman on the street who is busy bellowing at tea-bags and telling “morans” to get a brain can’t understand the obvious fact that our economy would be in much, much worse shape if their beloved Sarah Palin was sitting in on White House meetings. At least TIME magazine gets it…

For all of us who warned about the day of reckoning that would eventually be brought to us by Reagan-style, trickle-down supply side economics, congratulations.

That day is here.

Is the Recession Over?

Recession is a bad word

Recession is a bad word

The White House is claiming today that it is. While things may still look glum in some areas of the economic mess, recent reports show that the Economy is indeed turning around.

The White House is reporting at recovery.gov that the $150 billion in grants and loans made so far under the economic stimulus package have created or saved about 650,000 jobs. That is quite a number, and almost accounts for the nearly 700,000 jobs lost back in March, right before the stimulus kicked in. These first reports do not yet include the stimulus package’s tax cuts, safety net spending, and fiscal aid to strapped states, which the white house says could put the job created or saved numbers over a million, putting it on track to reach 3.5 million jobs created or saved in a three year span. These reports also do not include numbers for jobs that might have been created by subcontractors or suplliers further down the chain.

Proposition 1: Education in the Economic Re-assemblage

by Memeticdrool
Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 10:21pm Juneau Smog Blog Post Permalink Blog Post Trackback Read/Leave Comments Juneau Smog Twitter Retweet Proposition 1: Education in the Economic Re-assemblage

You’re obviously all asking yourselves, “Do I vote for improvements to Gastineau Elementary or not??”

So, we’ve all heard the news: the economy is in the tank.  Or maybe it is coming back to a theatre near you!  Either way, I’ve heard many people suggest that, while it was OK a couple years ago to vote for a new high school, maybe in today’s economy, it’s just too much to put out for the elementary kids.  Whatever may be going through your mind regarding the economy, the only reason any thinking individual should consider the question of funding education is if you yourself are asking, “Brother, can you spare a dime?”  Got milk?  Yes, then I think you are ready to spend on schools.

Seriously.  as a gen-X-er I will always vote for education.  Period.  Did you get the period there?  I mean, the libertarian in me is very on the fence about this whole upcoming drug testing program being promoted in Juneau schools; I’m not so sure my son needs to start experimenting with invasions of privacy at such a tender age of minordom.  However, I think it’s safe to assume that the money for Prop 1 is just going to pay for the facilities bills.

So, yes, the economy is in the tank, but go VOTE FOR SCHOOLS.  Your children will thank you.  And if you don’t have children, your 15-years-older self will thank you, when your own livelihood has not gone the way of Detroit due to constantly undercutting your own interests.
