Fired Up! Republicans Are Taking the Country Back … in Time

One of the battle cries of the far right is this: ‘We want to take our country back.’ Maybe you dismissed that as meaning, back from the Democrats. But you notice, they don’t say, ‘we want to take our government back.’ They say… ‘our country.’

And based on the evidence pouring out of state legislatures, that is what the Republican revolution of 2010 has set out to do — take the country back — back in time. Back to those golden days before civil rights and gender equality. It was so much easier back then, wasn’t it?

Today is International Women’s Day, and Republicans in Congress are celebrating by continuing their War Against Women by debating yet another bill that would restrict abortion rights. This new bill would make it illegal for anyone but a parent to accompany a young woman across state lines to seek an abortion — even if her parents are absent or abusive.
When will the assault on women stop? Republicans in Congress used abortion and Planned Parenthood funding as a bargaining chip during budget negotiations and almost shut down the government in the process. They introduced mandatory ultrasound bills, tried to narrow the definition of rape to include only “forcible rape” and barred the District of Columbia from being able to use its own locally raised funds to help low-income women pay for abortions.

Virginia is poised to pass legislation that would require women to endure this invasive ultrasound, for no medical reason, before receiving an abortion.

Daily chart: global abortion rates. Having fallen precipitously during the 1990s, the global abortion rate has now stalled, according to a new paper. In some parts of the world, the number of abortions termed as “unsafe” is on the rise. Laws that restrict abortion did not seem to lower the number of procedures—on the contrary, restrictive laws were associated with higher abortion rates.
